Do you need help choosing what to wear on your sailing trip? Here are some questions you should ask yourself before buying clothes for your sailing trip:
- Will they be comfortable AND functional?
- Can they protect me against the rain and weather?
- Does it protect me against UV rays? What about windchill temperature?
- How long do they last? Can they be cleaned and reused?
- Life Jacket
No matter what you wear under it, a life jacket is an essential piece of boating equipment. You need to have a life jacket that fits properly on your boat, whether you are a novice or an experienced sailor. Here are some additional recommendations:
- Foam life jackets – Less expensive
- Inflatable Life Vests- More discreet and practical although slightly more expensive.
- Non-Slip Shoes
Each boater should have a pair of non-slip rubber soled shoes. Make sure they are comfortable and durable to wear all day under the sun. Bonus points if the shoes are water-resistant or waterproof!
- Layers
Experienced sailors recommend wearing layers whenever you are on the water. You can then quickly adjust to changing weather conditions. Weather changes rapidly on the water, so be prepared!
Layers for your sailing clothing:
- A thin, breathable layer: It could be a tee shirt made from moisture-wicking polyester
- The heavier layer: It is this layer that will keep you warm
- Outer layer is designed to keep you dry. Rain jackets are a great option.
- Rain Jacket
You can expect wind when you are sailing. When there is wind, water splashes. To keep comfortable, wear a layer of clothing that will protect you from the wind and water flying. This usually means investing in a rain jacket.
